Syscal Terra Switch

The Syscal Terra Switch is the new generation of resistivity & IP surveying system. It mixes recent electronics advances with the standards of resistivitymeters designed by IRIS Instruments for more than 30 years such as robustness, compactness, light weight and large temperature range (-20 °C to +70 °C).
The transmitter part has been redisigned for a better cooling and improved performed in hot context. While the receiver part has been completely redisgned to offer an outstanding accuracy together with 20 channels making this system the most efficient of the market.

Although completely redesign, the Syscal Terra transmitter specifications are unchaged (250 W, 2000 Vpp) to keep the compatibility with your existing cables and Switch Pro unit (10 channels only). It allows to perform a large type of acquisition (SP, resistivity, IP for sounding, profiling, 2D, 3D, roll-along and 4D surveys) 

The color screen allows the user to check the apparent resistivity in real time, to visualize simultaneously the 20 IP decay curves and to make it easier the quality control after acquisition. The touchable screen improves the experience of navigation through the menus, allowing also to type directly the filename on a virtual keyboard.

The measurements are stored in a single datafile and downloaded using a USB key, a laptop connected through a USB cable or any WiFi device featuring a web explorer (any smartphone, tablet or laptop).

The Syscal Terra box features an independant module containing 4 x 96 W.h Li-ions batteries. This part can be easily opened, allowing the user to remove easily the internal batteries to simplify the shipping. The internal Li-ions batteries are totally optional as the system can operate with external batteries. A flat bottom plate is provided with the system to replace the battery module and save wiehgt and volume. The 4 x 96 W.h batteries can travel easily with you as cabin luggages according to IATA regulation. Each battery weighs 450 g and replaces a 2.6 kg standard 12 V lead-acid battery of equivalent capacity.

The Syscal Terra firmware can be updated by yourself from a laptop and a dedicated software (IRIS Updater) that search for the last firmware available automatically. The user will thus have access to new developments and improvements throughout the entire life of the device, free of charge.
The device is sold with small standard testing accessories and features a self-diagnostic menu for the complete testing of the device (testing of transmitter, receiver and switch boards, external battery capacity and cables contintuity). An additional accessory can be sold to test the cable electrical insulation. Diagnostic report files are automatically generated and can be inserted in the report to prove the proper functionning of the system.

The Syscal Terra remains compact and is the only one in the market (with the Syscal Pro) to fit in one unique box for up to 120 electrodes. Moreover it offers a unique scalability with the exclusive possibility to use two Syscal Terra (or more) in master-slave mode, allowing to combine for example 2 Syscal Terra Switch 48 to get a Syscal Terra 96.

The scalability is even more developped with the unique possibility to use several systems in network (not connected together) working synchroneously on the same sequence and allowing for the first time to measure under roads for example without impacting traffic. The multi-Syscal mode is based on the synchronization of the different units on the GPS-PPS clock.
This mode can be complexified again by creating sequences for which different Syscal are injecting at the same time (multi-Tx). This very new and unique feature allows to perform high resolution 3D survey in a record time without any communication between the different units. This specific data can be processed thanks to ERTLab Studio software.

The Syscal Terra can records the current and voltage timeseries in background (optional). It allows if necessary to visualize and to reprocess your dataset a posteriori on a laptop with a free dedicated software (FullWave Viewer 2) using advanced algorithms. In the following dataset, you can see how FullWave Viewer 2 is able to correct for electrode polarization effect (level 2 of the pseudo-section).

Several options and accessories are also directly provided with the Syscal Terra such as: - the monitoring mode allowing to program your device to wake up and acquire at specific date. The system has also been tought for long term monitoring with the possibility to send data on a FTP server. - the Rx only option to use the Syscal as a simple receiver with an external transmitter (e.g. TIP, TIPIX) - the 1200W external power converter  - the dynamic option for land and river/marine continuous surveys - the borehole cables to realize a simple diagraphy, a surface to borehole tomography or a transmission tomographyRead more information in the brochure.

Characteristics

General specifications

GPS: 

Internal GPS for a simplified management of the global (UTM) coordinates.

7 inches 480 x 800 color touch screen (touch screen can be disabled).

Fullwave recording: 

Possibility to record 100 Hz fullwave form timeseries of voltage in background while measuring. Possibility to record full waveform only up to 1 kHz of sampling rate.

Monitoring: 

Possibility to use the system in monitoring mode. System is controlled by scripts written by the user. The scripts can be changed remotely. Data can be sent to a FTP server automatically. An additional module integrated to the Syscal Terra box, dedicated to the management of battery charge in between measurement, can be added to the Syscal Terra.

Receiver only: 

Possibility to use the system in receiver mode only (to be used with external transmitter).

Dynamic acquisition: 

Possibility to measure continuously resistivity and IP from an adapted cable towed on the ground or in the water. This type of functioning does not require additional PC or tablet.

Mode master-slave: 

Connected to another Syscal Terra Switch, the Syscal Terra Switch behaves like a Switch Terra to make a system with 192 electrode from two 96 electrode systems for example. 

Combines several Syscal Terra for complex surveys without connection between them. Two Syscal Terra can work synchronously on the same sequence, based on their GPS clock. In Multi-Tx mode, several Syscal can survey simultaneously on the same sequence , synchronized through GPS clock.

The Syscal Terra is provided with different accessories and internal software that allow to test the receiver board, the transmitter board, the switching relays and the external battery capacity.

Rx firmware update: 

Update the Syscal Terra Rx firmware by yourself when a new version is available.

Batteries: 

Removable internal Li-ion batteries (4 x 96 Wh). Possibility to connect external battery for the Tx and Rx. Automatic recognition of external battery.

Data download: 

From USB key, WiFi connection from a web browser or using USB cable.

Quality control:

Computation of the quality factor on resistivity and chargeability and storage of a stacked semi-period with 1 sample every 10ms (even when timeseries are not recorded).

Fullwaveform processing

Possibility to perform advanced processing of full waveform data on Fullwave Viewer II dedicated software to improve the data quality.
